School Council
Our school council is made up of 12 members. One boy and one girl from each class. At the start of every year speeches and a vote are held within class to choose who the new members will be. We hold fortnightly meetings and it is our responsibility to listen to the other members of our class and then share new ideas and opportunities that we think will benefit our school and make our learning better. E.g. We are often asked to give feedback on different subjects and lessons in order for teachers to improve resources and topics. We are also expected to make decisions about new equipment and overall school uptake. E.g. A new play hut or the canteen being painted.
House Captains
Our house captains are voted in by the whole school and are made up of 12 members of year 6. There are 2 house captains and 2 vice captains per house (Afon Rhymni, Afon Taff and Afon Usk) made up of one boy and girl for each position. House captains regularly meet to discuss the school and put forward ideas suggested to us by other school children. We have recently reintroduced the buddy system to support children who are struggling with friendships at playtimes and are running Fruity Friday to encourage healthy eating around the school. We deliver assemblies about topics that we feel are important to discuss with the school. We take on roles such as distributing and managing playtime resources in the ‘Play Hut’ and captain our teams during the annual sports day.
Eco – Committee
Our school council is made up of the same 12 members as the school council. It is our responsibility to ensure we are in charge of environmental actions that we can engage the whole school in. We are currently working towards our platinum award. Some of the actions for this year include, taking part in ‘The Big Pedal’ for Active Journeys, litter picking in the local community, recycling crisp packets, saving gas and electricity, holding a well-being week and starting up a gardening club. All members of the committee have a different role and are in charge of ensuring that one of the different areas is carried out effectively at some point during the year.
This year, Bedwas and Rhydri both renewed their title as a healthy school and Bedwas Junior School received a platinum flag as an eco-school.
Heddlu Bach
Both Schools run the Heddlu Bach scheme where 12 children from year 6 take on the responsibility of a mini-police officer. They learn more about the role and work with Gwent Police to make the school and the community a safer place.
Digital Wizards
Children from across the entire school, who are particularly skilled in I.T., receive masterclasses from Mr Ankin, so that they can teach their peers new skills using a “no hands” approach.
